Best Copy Protection Software

Post by Support »

What constitutes a good copy protection software or solution comes down to whether it will do the job properly for the desired scenario.

There are a lot of good solutions and they all have their limitations. Even our own solutions have limitations and this section is here to help those find the best copy protection for your project. For example, what are your requirements?
  • For which media type, ie: PDF, images or video?
  • For download and desktop reading or for reading online?
  • With options for DRM (access control) or just copy protection?
  • OS support, ie: for Windows, Mac, Linux and mobile phones?
Please give a brief outline of your project and if using a website, tell us whether you are using a CMS like WordPress or Moodle, etc.

Copy Protection : Software Protection vs Image Protection

Blog - https://artistscope.com/blog/Copy-Prote ... ection.asp

Great article!

It clarifies the grey matter surrounding the term "copy protection" which has been misused to no end. Even Google is confused because when we search that term we mostly get references to file copy prevention solutions which are totally different to image copy prevention (capture and recording), ie: preventing DVD copy is nothing like the prevention of screenshots/recordings.

But then Google also returns Anti-virus software in its results for "copy protection". I did further research and found that search results for "website protection" is also inundated by Anti-virus products. Sorry, but I don't know any webmasters that use anti-virus software on their web site or on their server.

Even Wikipedia is confused about "copy protection". Their page looks so confused that it needs a "to be demolished" notice. Wiki-talk calls for a cleanup but its too far gone to fix it short of scrapping it and starting again. In any case its probably not a topic that should be managed by non-believers.

Looking at the current first page of search results, what do we see?
  • 1. Wikipedia - info adulterated by self promotion
  • 2. Reddit - a social media platform for muppets
  • 3. A collection of images for disk copy
  • 4. TV Tropes - yet another wiki wanna be
  • 5. HowStuffWorks - yet another wanna be info site for ad revenue
  • 6. Wikipedia - again, but about DVD protection
  • 7. NexCopy - USB file protection
  • 8. GillSoft - one of a hundred PDF protection clones
  • 9. Video collection - about pirating games and videos
  • 10. NewSoftwares - nothing more than a password protected ZIP app
What use are those search results to anyone?

Perhaps we should start a new category here for Copy Protection Reviews?

The problem with Wiki sites is that articles are either contributed by people who have used similarly bad search results for their research or are sublimely trying to create a promotional backlinks. None of them have been written by anyone with experience in the field.

But anyone with experience in the field like WilliamK, someone who has been involved in the development of copy protection since its beginning, and someone who has witnessed newcomers as they have arrived and who knows what they did contribute and when, is not allowed to share that information. And yes, he would know the copycats.

To be fair, that would need to be categorised, because disk copy prevention has nothing to do with image copy prevention.

We should give some thought to those categories.

Interesting. I suppose that we should make it clear that disk copy prevention doesn't belong at all. In any case "disk protection" begins in their manufacturing process and it's not something that artists and authors could afford.

My suggestion would be to start with categories for each media and then each review (each product) can be a new topic that can accept further comments and suggestions. I'll check if we can use a rating system.

For the record, I don't mind giving credit where it is due.
