If black areas appear on an edge of the saved image then the cause is most likely that the image was from your own collection and it was never large enough to survive cropping. On image upload page the minimum size requirement is stated.

You can upload any sized image as along as it is larger than the required minimum size. During the upload process you can select the area to use and the upload scripts will crop it to the correct proportion and size.
